Franziska Lebrun
By Thomas Gainsborough, 1780

German soprano and composer Franziska Lebrun (1756-1791) was a chamber musician in the Munich court, held the title virtuosa da camera for her operatic singing in Mannheim, and concertized extensively throughout Europe. She made appearances at La Scala in Milan, the Concert Spirituel in Paris, the King’s Theatre in London, the Viennese Burgtheater, the Berlin carnivals, and the Teatro S Carlo.

During her time in London she composed and published two sets of sonatas for violin and keyboard. These were quickly distributed in Paris, Amsterdam, Offenbach, Berlin, Mannheim, and Worms.
