I am excited to announce the publication of my Expanding the Music Theory Canon anthology with SUNY Press! The book contains 256 musical examples (including 19 full scores) by 67 women and/or people of color active from c.1600–1900 and is divided into 33 chapters covering:
- fundamentals
- embellishing tones
- diatonic and chromatic tonal harmony
- phrase structures
- classical forms
Charts in the introduction show how each example in the anthology corresponds to each chapter in the seven most-used music theory textbooks in the United States. The book also contains a biographical entry and image for each composer as well as a bibliography for further reading.
Order your copy before March 31, 2024 and use the code XNEW1223 to receive a 30% discount! Additionally, you are invited to stop by the SUNY Press table in the exhibition hall at AMS/SMT in Denver on Saturday, November 11 from 10:30–11:15 a.m. for a book signing event.
I am also pleased to share my collaboration with Auralia & Musition where I am curating a collection of worksheets based on the anthology. These worksheets will be available in the coming months, and instructors are eligible to sign up for a free cloud trial. Sarah Louden and I will be sharing our thoughts on using inclusive course materials in Auralia & Musition to Reframe the Music Theory Curriculum at AMS/SMT in Denver on Friday, November 10 from 4–5:30 p.m.
Stay tuned for a monthly blog highlighting composers featured in the anthology and tips on using their music in your classes.
I hope to see you in Denver!
