Sophia Maria Westenholz (1759-1838) was a German pianist and composer of lieder and solo keyboard works. She studied piano and voice with J.W. Hertel and was likely a singer with the Ludwigslust Hofkapelle as a teenager. By 1799 she was known as the Kapellmeisterin at the Ludwigslust court and remained active as a court musician until her retirement in 1821. During her career she made several concert tours in Germany. As a performer, Westenholz was revered as “one of the leading female musicians in Europe.” Admired for both her singing and pianism, she was compared to C.P.E. Bach. Others praised her for her performances on the glass harmonica.
